Description

- 24.5cm., 9 5/8 in. high
of urn form, the surface simulating agate in tones of brown and cream slip, applied with two gilded loop handles with ram mask terminals from which hang a gilded festoon, the lower section applied with a stiff acanthus leaf band, the foot with leaf moulded edge, all picked out in gilding, supported on a white stoneware base with guilloche panels, the base with impressed WEDGWOOD mark,

Cover: The knop is restored, chip to rim with associated spray to flange. There is possibly some traces of re-gilding to the handles.

Catalogue Note
This form of marbled or agate ware was probably introduced at Wedgwood before 1768. Josiah Wedgwood enthusiastically refers to this form of decoration in a letter dated 3rd January 1768:
'There is much sin to be committed in the Marble way, as you will guess by the patterns. Ld have mercy upon our old Stock say I!'
