Not viewed out of the frame. The sheet appears to be affixed in several places to a backing card. The upper horizontal edge of the sheet is perforated, inkeeping with the sheet having been taken from the Artist's sketchbook. The sheet undulates slightly, and there is a vertical crease along the left edge, with some associated losses, and a further very minor crease towards the right side of the upper horizontal edge. There are some small, isolated flecks of loss to the gouache in places, most apparent to the green leaves near the right vertical edge. There is some rubbing and light wear in places along the edges, possibly as a result of a previous mount. There is some light surface dirt and studio detritus, and some very small spots of minor foxing in places. There are one or two light scuffs to the surface of the work. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition, with fresh and vivid colours throughout. The work is float mounted and presented in a simple gilt frame, held under glass. In 1942, Julian went on a tour of duty to North Africa and the Middle East where he inspected camouflage for ammunition and fuel depots and reported back to Farnham where he was based with Stanley Hayter on the industrial camouflage project. In his spare time he painted a series of lyrical gouaches with minimal materials of scenes in Lagos, Kano and Freetown.
