Condition

The wooden relief construction appears secure. There are nail heads visible on the wooden elements in keeping with the artist's techniques. There are some tiny scuffs to the edges of the grey painted wooden elements. There are some scattered light scratches and rubbing to the grey backboard. There are some spots of glue residue to the wooden elements. Subject to the above the work appears to be in very good and original condition. Ultraviolet light reveals no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching. The work is presented in a painted wooden frame, held behind glass. Catalogue Note

In the 1970s Trevelyan started to look back at his ideas and interests from the mid- 1930s and these wooden constructions using driftwood and shapes of crescent moons and circles relate to this period and incorporate in three dimensional form his abstract constructions of the 1930s. Philip Trevelyan comments on these works 'In one sense they were a return to the 1930s, but in another they were new and marvellous distillations of his personal language' (Philip Trevelyan, Julian Trevelyan: Picture Language, Lund Humphries, Farnham, 2013, p.226).
