Condition

The sheet undulates slightly, but otherwise appears sound. There is a crease to the upper right corner, with some associated wear and minor losses to the pigment, and there are some further light creases, handling marks and instances of wear in places. There is a small incised loss to the sheet in the stone wall just above the bottle, which may be in keeping with the artist's materials, and there is an area of uneveness to the sheet just below the 'days' lettering of the main title. There are some very tiny lines of craquelure to the ink in places, with some possible tiny flecks of loss, visible only upon extremely close inspection. There are some small, scattered spots of staining and some discolouration and surface dirt to the sheet in places. The work is presented in a dark wooden frame, float mounted against a cream backing card and held behind glass. Catalogue Note

In 1957 Trevelyan wrote a memoir of his life as a painter entitled Indigo Days and the present work is a study for the cover. 'Indigo' in the title refers to the colour of the mud in the Thames by Durham Wharf and highlights the importance of the Wharf to his creative work.
