Catalogue Note
After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque. Among the features added over subsequent centuries was the sultan's loge, seen in the background, built by the Italian-Swiss architects, the Fossati brothers. The Fossatis, who undertook a major restoration of the Hagia Sophia for Sultan Abdül Mecit in 1847-9, also added the eight great calligraphic roundels that hang over the nave, two of which are seen here. They bear the names of Allah, the Prophet Mohammed, the first four caliphs, and Hasan and Hussein, two of the Prophet's grandsons who are revered as martyrs.
