Condition

The painting appears to be in very good condition, with no extant damages or loss of paint. The catalogue illustration is representative. The panel remains flat and in a good stable condition, with no supportive structure on the verso. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a very opaque and discoloured varnish overall, as well as a small number of minor retouchings. These retouchings are predominantly strengthening in the left hand figure's hat, in the fur around his neck and in the shadows in the centre of his cape. There are a small number of further minor scattered strengthenings to the silhouette of the two figures and in the draperies. Otherwise the painting appears to be very well preserved and would respond well to cleaning. Held in a gilt wood frame.
