Description

  • Gerrit Battem
  • Winter townscape with a military encampment and figures skating on the frozen river
  • bears signature lower right: A. VANDERNEER
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The painting is constructed of two horizontal panels, which are uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured but even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals restoration along the panel join and scattered spot retouching in the sky and around the uppermost branches of the tree, upper left. There is very little other intervention and the painting is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

Although this view of a town with its distinctive neo-Classical building remains unidentified, Battem favoured a very similar composition in a number of works, including that sold London, Sotheby's, 30 October 2008, lot 49, and the painting offered Amsterdam, Christie's, 25 November 2014, lot 46. We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer and Ellis Dullaart of the RKD, The Hague, for their help in the cataloguing of this lot.
