The composition relates to an Adoration of the Shepherds (Manchester City Art Gallery),1 attributed to Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483–1561), son of Domenico (d. 1494), and is close to several others by different hands, suggesting a studio drawing must have been in circulation.
