Description

  • Virgin and Child Enthroned
  • gilt and polychromed poplar
  • Spanish, probably Valladolid, late 13th/ early 14th century

Condition

Given the age of the sculpture, the condition is very good overall, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is a loss to the terrasse at the front between the feet, due to past worming, and a further loss to the terrasse and foot on the proper left side. There is also a loss to the throne on the proper right side, and one piece appears to be reattached. There are a few further very minor losses. There is wear to the polychromy and gilding, including some flaking and minor losses, particularly at the high points. There is also some craquelure, including to the Virgin's face. There is an area of scratches to the gilding on the Virgin's chest. There are several layers of old polychromy and gilding, and it is likely that some of it has been refreshed.
