Description

  • Saint John the Baptist Preaching
  • stained limewood
  • Austrian, 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with dirt and some wear to the surface consistent with age. The surface is striated, which appears to have been intended by the artist. There are a few losses, notably to the proper left index finger and to the big toe on the proper right foot. It is possible that the base has been cut down in places. A few sections are carved separately and joints are visible, notably at both elbows, around the proper right thumb, and to the neck; it is likely that the majority of these represent reattachments. There are a few minor chips, including to the edges of the cloak and to the hair. There is some minor evidence of past worming and minor stable splitting to the wood, in particular to the base and to the proper left foot. There is some wood patching to the proper right shin. There are several specks of white residue to the base. There is a hole to the top of the head and two more to the back of the neck. There is a metal hook for mounting on the reverse. The base is possibly later.

Catalogue Note

This dynamic figure of Saint John the Baptist might have once held a lamb, his traditional symbol, on the base: he is pointing at it with his proper right hand. Compare with a pair of figures sold at Sotheby's New York, 30 January 2009, lot 332.
