Description
- Pair of Crouching Tritons
- bronze, on regence wood bases with brass inlay and mounts
- Italian, Florence or Venice, late 17th century
Provenance
Private collection, Ireland, since the 18th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronzes is good, with some wear and dirt to the surfaces consistent with age. There is particularly dirt in the crevices. One of the figures has remnants of original sprues which were not removed after the casting of the bronze; this may have been deliberate as they are appropriate for the subject. There are a small few lacunae as a result of the casting process, notably to one of the figures' top of the head and proper left elbow, and a larger one to the other figure's proper right upper arm at the back. There are also a few minor stable casting fissures, including to one of the figures' proper left arm. There is some wear to the lacquer patina of both bronzes, including rubbing at the high points and some flaking in areas. One of the figures slides and revolves on its base but is stably attached; the other rocks a little in its setting but is also stable.
The bases are in good condition with some dirt and general wear, including tarnishing to the metal mounts and some warping to the metal inlay. One of the feet of one of the bases is slightly loose but stable. There are several nicks and scratches to the wood. One of the bases rocks very slightly on an even surface.

Catalogue Note
These characterful unfinished grotesque monsters are reminiscent of works by Damiano Capelli (fl. 1662-1668); see the group of a man with devils sold in these rooms on 2 July 2013, lot 71. A related, but different, figure was offered at Christie's on 9 December 1980, lot 202.
