Description

  • Virgin of the Annunciation
  • alabaster
  • Attributed to Jacques du Broeucq (1505-1584) Southern Netherlandish, circa 1550

Condition

Overall the condition of the alabaster is good, with some wear and minor dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is veining to the alabaster throughout, consistent with the material, including some stable hairline fissures to the proper right hand and chest and the proper left shoulder. There is some restoration to the nose. The stone is slightly weathered or rubbed, including in the face. There is minor erosion to the stone, in particular at the back. There are a few losses, notably one to the proper right back edge behind the leg and to the bottom corners at the back. There are further chips and abrasions to the other corners and the bottom edge, and a few small chips to the high points of the carving.

Catalogue Note

This small alabaster figure is a variant of the Virgin in Dubroeucq's Annunciation group at the Collégiale Ste-Waudru in Mons. It is likely that the same model was executed several times by the sculptor and his workshop as part of separate commissions.
