Catalogue Note

This beautiful figure of the Virgin in Prayer is carved in the style of Lombard sculptors operating in the circle of Giovanni Antonio Amadeo (circa 1447-1522). The composition of the marble is very close to the work of Gasparo Cairano da Milano (active 1487-1517), which is characterised by an expressive realism complemented by classical elements. Similar female figures by Cairano can be found on the portal of Sant’Apollonio in the cathedral in Brescia, as well as on a marble altar from the Kress collection now in the National Gallery in Washington (inv. no. K.123).
