Condition

Overall the condition of the relief is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is wear to the polychromy throughout, including craquelure and flaking. There are particular losses to the polychromy at the high points of the drapery, notably the blue cloak. Some of the polychromy has probably been refreshed, including the stripe on the child's drapery and its necklace. It is possible that some of the background around the composition has been cut away; this is particularly noticeable to the child's right. There are a few minor chips to the stucco at the high points of the composition, and larger chips around the edges and corners of the skirting base.

Catalogue Note

Although seemingly a variant of Donatello's celebrated Verona Madonna, the present composition also incorporates elements from other models by the Florentine master, such as his Pazzi Madonna, in which the Virgin interacts similarly with the Christ Child, and the relief in the Louvre whose Virgin exhibits a comparably rich veil and angular forms.
