Description
- Pair of angels holding candelabra
- gilt and polychromed wood
- Northern Italian, second half 15th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood figures is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The wings of both angels are lost and there are cavities at the backs where they would have been inserted. There is evidence of past worming to both figures, and in particular the one holding the arms to his proper left. There is wear to the gilding and polychromy, including craquelure, and there are some losses to the gilding and polychromy, in particular around the hands and at some of the high points of the drapery, and to the upper sections of the bases. Some of the polychromy has probably been refreshed, including in the faces. The front edge of the bottom of one of the bases has been cut down slightly. There are integral wood stumps at the top of the candelabra, on which another part may have been mounted.
