Description

  • Pair of Standing Angels
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Italian, Tuscany, 16th century

Provenance

Carlo De Carlo, Florence;
his sale, Eredi di Carlo De Carlo, Semenzato, Florence, 17 October 2000, lot 112

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good with wear and dirt to the surfaces consistent with age. The wings of both angels are lost and there are cavities at the back where they would have been inserted. There is evidence of past worming throughout which has led to some areas of loss, notably to one of the angel's hands and candelabrum. There is wear to the polychromy throughout including some losses, notably to the arms, and some flaking in areas. The red ground underneath the gilding has been revealed in areas. There is a hole to the top of each head and there is a small hole to the top of each candelabrum. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material. There are some ghosted labels to both undersides.
