Description

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the patina and the modelling at the high points, in particular to the figure at the top. There are a few small lacunae consistent with casting, notably around the bottom edge, where there also appear to be some minor losses. The clapper appears to be a later replacement.

Catalogue Note

The present bell is closely comparable with another attributed to the Bonaventurini foundry in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. M.686-1910). The figured handle recalls those from bells by Giuseppe de Levis and his Workshop, which operated in Verona from circa 1570.
