Description
- Inkwell and lid
- bronze, with a lead receptacle, on a later yellow marble base with probably associated bronze feet in the form of eagles
- Attributed to the workshop of Nicolo Roccatagliata (1593-1636) Italian, Venice, early 17th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the inkwell is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age and use. There is some rubbing at the high points. There are a few small lacunae to the bronze, consistent with Venetian casting practice, notably on the lid. The putto and coat of arms on the lid are slightly loose in their settings but stable. There appears to be some lead fill to a section of the edge of the lid. The lead receptacle on the inside detaches.
The Eagles that form the feet are in good condition with some wear, including some rubbing to the lacquer patina and dust in the crevices. There are a few losses to the feathers of the wings at the top.
The marble base is in very good condition with some dirt where the bronzes are mounted and a few very minor chips along the edges.
