  • Relief with the Annunciation
  • oak, in a gilt wood and woven jute frame
  • Southern Netherlandish, late 16th century
inscribed: A873 in ink on the reverse

Condition

Overall the condition of the relief is good, with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are a few losses, including: to the angel's fingers on the proper right hand; to a section of his staff at the top; to the Virgin's proper left thumb; to God the Father's orb and proper right hand; to the branches in the vase on the proper left side. There are also a few losses to the bottom edge of the composition, including the Virgin's desk, and these have been partially filled with wax.There are a few further chips and minor losses, including some evidence of past worming. There is minor stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material. There is minor wear to the frame, in particular to the gilding.
