Description

- Attributed to Jean-Antoine Belleteste (1731-1811) French, Dieppe, late 18th/ early 19th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the ivory is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age, with particular dirt in the crevices. There is some white paint to the top of Venus' head, possibly concealing a small loss. There is veining to the ivory consistent with the material; this is particularly noticeable at the back, where the ivory has darkened. There is minor stable hairline splitting consistent with the material, including to Venus' proper left side. There is an original ivory insert to Cupid's proper left thigh; the joint is slightly open but stable, and the area is concealed by the cornucopia when seen from the front. The base is in good condition with wear, including a loss to the wood at the bottom on the left side. The ivory panel on the proper left side of the base does not join evenly with the front and back panels.
