Catalogue Note
These impressive bronze groups represent two of the most celebrated French sculptures of the 18th century: Hercule sur le bücher by Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746)(the present lot) and Hercule enchaîné par l'Amour by Jean-Joseph Vinache (the succeeding lot). The first was Coustou's morceau de réception at the Académie royale in 1704, whilst the second was Vinache's morceau de réception in 1741. Both are now in the musée du Louvre (inv. nos. M.R. 1809 and M.R. 2114). The present casts are attractive bronze reductions with finely textured surfaces, and are likely to have been cast in the first decades of the 19th century.
