- Monogrammist F.I.R. German, second half 18th century
one monogrammed: F.I.R. on the reverse
Condition
Overall the condition of the reliefs is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor veining to the alabaster, consistent with the material, notably to the relief with the head facing left. There is also some fill to this relief, possibly due to veining, in particular to the nose, forehead, and the truncation of the chest on the proper left side. There are a few minor chips and abrasions at the high points. There is minor rubbing to the carvings.
The metal stand is in very good condition with minor wear including a few scratches.

Catalogue Note
These fascinating alabaster medallions are a new addition to the small oeuvre of the anonymous German monogrammist F.I.R. At least six small-scale works in alabaster bearing this monogram are known, including a portrait medallion in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg (inv. no. 1928.82), which compares stylistically to the present pair. The expressive representations of old age are characteristic of the late-18th century interest in physiognomy and psychology.
