Description

  • Bust of the Emperor Caracalla
  • white marble, veined light brown marble and veined purple marble, on a veined grey-white marble socle and a pink granite column
  • Italian, probably 17th century and later

Condition

Overall, the condition of the marble is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is particular dirt to the crevices of the head. There is veining to the coloured marble torso throughout, consistent with the material. Some of the veins are slightly open but stable, notably around the proper left shoulder. There is a slightly open but stable original joint running across the proper right shoulder, it is also visible at the back below the neck. There is an area of loss around the truncation at the bottom on the proper left side. There appears to be some minor weathering to the surface of the torso. Some fill is visible around the joint between the head and the torso. There are a few chips and abrasions, notably around the edge of the truncation, and to the bottom of the clasp of the cuirass. There are a few very minor chips to the socle. The condition of the granite column is good, with some wear and dirt consistent with age. It is composed of two sections, the column's shaft and the base; they are probably associated. The surface has blackened around the circular section at the bottom and on the top of the base. There are chips and abrasions around the edges, with some larger chips around the top and the bottom of the column shaft.

Catalogue Note

Borrowed from classical antiquity, the coloured marble bust became a sought-after statement piece in Baroque sculpture. The medium appealed not only because of its striking coloristic effect and evocation of Roman statuary, but through the rarity of marbles used and combined. The different stones often originated from distant locations around the world, attesting to the luxury afforded by owners of such works in marble.

The present bust is surmounted by a later marble head representing the Roman Emperor Caracalla (AD 188-AD 217), whose distinctive portraiture was characterised by his short, curly hair, broad features, and fierce frown. Breaking with convention in imperial portraiture, Caracalla thus presented himself as a resilient, soldier-like, ruler with whom his troops could have identified.

The imposing effect of this monumental bust is enhanced by its sumptuous granite column.
