  • Circle of Michiel van der Voort (1667-1737) Southern Netherlandish, Antwerp, early 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. A few sections are carved separately and joints are visible, including at the suckling baby's proper left leg, the proper left shoulder of the baby seated on the devil (the arm may be a replacement), and the devil's proper left lower arm. There are also joints at both wrists of the baby on the proper right side, which are slightly loose. The devil's proper left little finger and Charity's proper left thumb are lost; there is also an open but stable split to Charity's hand in this area. There is a further loss to Charity's drapery around her proper left elbow. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, notably at the bottom and at the back. The serpentine base is in good condition with some wear, including minor chips to the edges and corners. There is a sticker to the base inscribed with information on the object.
