  • Northern Italian, 17th century
surmounting a military trophy

Provenance

Professor Michael Jaffé CBE (1923-1997), Cambridge, United Kingdom;

Condition

Overall the condition of the terracotta is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is a probably later dark slip to the surface which may conceal some condition points. This has flaked a little, including at the back. There are some very light abrasions to some of the high points, and there is a loss to the central leaf on the armour at the proper right elbow. There are a few minor stable fissures in the terracotta, including one running through the shield. There are a few scratches, including to the chest and the proper right shoulder. The back is sketchily modelled and there is a lacuna at the back of the neck. The top of the baton in the proper right hand is lost, and the bottom of the shield is lost.
