Condition

Overall the condition of the bronzes is good with some wear and dirt to the surfaces consistent with age. There is rubbing to the lacquer patinas at the high points and also some minor flaking in a few areas including Venus' proper left hip and abdomen. There are a few nicks, including to Venus' proper left knee and also to Bacchus' proper left knee. There are a few original stable casting fissures and lacunae to the bronzes, notably to the back of Venus' proper left knee, to Bacchus' inner proper right thigh and around his ankles and his proper left lower arm. There is particular dirt to Bacchus vine leaf covering. The group with Bacchus sits very slightly loosely on the marble base but is stable. There is writing in black ink to the back of Bacchus' thigh. The marble bases are in good condition with minor dirt and wear including a few small chips and a restoration to the one of the corners on the base for the Bacchus group.

Catalogue Note

These two elegant Venetian Renaissance bronzes relate to models associated with
Niccolò Roccatagliata (1593-1636) and Tiziano Aspetti (1565-1607). Compare, for example, the Bacchus with Roccatagliata's Bacchus of which there is a cast in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. A.100-1910), and the Venus with the Inkwell with Venus sold Sotheby's New York on 16 June 1996, lot 125. Such quality bronzes were produced by now anonymous foundries in Venice after celebrated models by the great Venetian 16th-century masters. The figure of Bacchus is a particularly attractive cast.
