Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas is lined. The stretcher is slightly warped. The paint surface has an even varnish layer. There are two small paint losses in the upper left corner. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows scattered retouchings mainly at the upper and lower edges. There are small areas of fragile and lifting paint mainly within the areas of retouching. Overall the painting is in reasonably good condition.

Catalogue Note

Scipione Cignaroli depicted this view of the Susa Valley, Piedmont, from the area including the towns of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino and Avigliana, on a number of occasions. See, for example, the pair of paintings in the Palazzo Reale, Turin, documented in the court records of 1740, or the canvas sold Milan, Sotheby's, 15 December 1992, lot 271. We are grateful to Professor Arabella Cifani, who dates this work to circa 1735, for her help in the cataloguing of this lot.
