Condition
The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The panel is slightly bowed. The paint surface has an uneven varnish and several paint losses. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows discoloured varnish layers and scattered retouchings throughout. Overall the painting is in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Professor Alessandro Ballarin for confirming the attribution to Battista Dossi. An alternative attribution to Sebastiano Filippi (active in Lendinara, Rovigo, circa 1511-28) has been proposed by Professors Peter Humfrey and Mauro Lucco.1
