Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas is lined. The paint surface has a relatively uneven varnish layer. There is a pattern of craquelure throughout the composition with a very small area of lifting paint between the buttons of the sitter's coat and a very tiny paint loss to the left of this. There are some undulations to the canvas including three raised areas corresponding to previous repairs to the canvas. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows a heavily discoloured varnish layer and also shows several areas of retouching. Overall the painting is in fair condition. The work is framed.
