Provenance

Anonymous sale ('Property of a Private Collector'), New York, Sotheby's, 14 January 1988, lot 168.

Condition

Both copper plates are flat and the paint surfaces both stable with clear and even varnishes. Neither painting has any visible damages and both appear to be in excellent original condition. Inspection of the former, the scene before a classical building, under ultraviolet light reveals very minor scattered retouchings in the sky and a retouched surface scratch in the skirt of the lady in blue seen from behind at the left. Inspection under UV of the latter scene with backgammon players reveals almost no intervention at all. The pictures are offered in matching elaborately carved gilt wood frames in good condition, with only one or two chips and losses.
