Description

  • Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato
  • Madonna and Child
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Private collection, Austria.

Condition

The painting has a new relining and seems to be recently cleaned and restored. The varnish is clear and even, and there are no major damages visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals tiny sensitively executed retouchings to the craquelure throughout the figure of the Madonna and Child. The lower and lower right edge seem to have suffered somewhat in the past and have bands of restoration along the picture's edge, not visible to the naked eye. There are some retouchings along the left margin to mask old stretcher marks. There are one or two retouched old damages, to a one inch horizontal old damage beneath the virgin's ear and to another in her hair. There is also a one inch diagonal restoration on her hand, and a patch of localised retouching to the Christ Child's chin. In fair overall condition and offered in a carved and giltwood frame in good condition.
