Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. There is an overall pattern of fine lines of craquelure, some of which are slightly raised. The paint surface is secure. The varnish layers are slightly glossy and uneven. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows opaque and discoloured varnish layers and areas of retouching predominantly of strengthening around the birds, hare, the sitter's clothing and foreground. There are other scattered retouchings. Overall the painting is in reasonably good condition. The work is framed.
