Condition

The panel is derived from a single, uncradled plank, which is flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and very slightly uneven. The ground is visible in the more thinly-painted areas of the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals spot retouching in the upper half of the painting, mainly along horizontal lines in the upper left and upper right corners. There is also a horizontal line of retouching, measuring approx. 3 cm. along the lower left margin below the crab. In good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

This composition by Van Kessel is based on Jan Davidsz. de Heem's Still Life with a Roemer of 1652 in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.1 A second version by Van Kessel, also signed and dated 1653, is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux.2 We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for endorsing the attribution upon inspection of the painting in person and for informing us that it will appear under cat. no. A148 in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, as a copy by Jan Van Kessel the Elder after De Heem's original composition in Copenhagen.
