Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. The paint surface has an uneven and discoloured varnish layer. Old discoloured retouchings are visible in natural light. There is an indentation near the upper left corner and a small hole in the canvas above the cherub's leg in the upper right corner. There is a vertical possible seam visible on the right of the composition running vertically through the cherub and Venus. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows extensive retouchings throughout the composition, including large areas on the cherub, Venus, the figures, the sky and the foreground. Overall the painting is in fair condition. The work is framed.
