Workshop of Pieter Coecke van Aelst the Elder

Estimate
15,000 - 20,000 GBP
bidding is closed

Description

  • Pieter Coecke van Aelst the Elder
  • The Last Supper
  • dated centre right on the roundel: 1538
  • oil on oak panel, the reverse with four wax seals (probably) with the inescutcheon of the Feuquières of Picardie

Condition

The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There are some small areas of discoloured retouching in the surface on which the basket of fruit rests, in the foreground (visible in the catalogue illustration). Ultraviolet light reveals an extensive, but extremely sensitively-executed, campaign of restoration throughout the painting: in the tiles in the foreground; in the darks of the basket, left; in the tablecloth; in details of the figures, notably the faces of Christ and Judas (pointing to himself in profile, on the stool); in the darks of the background; the roundels; and in the sky visible through the open window. There is also restoration to a horizontal split running the width of the panel, approx. 20 cm. from the lower margin. In overall fair condition.
