Catalogue Note

Despite being 'squared for transfer', the tree in this drawing does not reappear in one of Constable's surviving oil paintings. There is, however, a pencil drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum; A Willow Tree in Flatford Meadows, that is dated 13 October 1827 and may show the same tree from a different perspective. Peter Bower has previously suggested that this large-scale sheet dates to the 1820s.
