Catalogue Note
It has been suggested that this watercolour dates to 1835 or 1836. In October of the previous year, Palmer had written enthusiastically to George Richmond that he felt ‘more energetic and ambition for excellence in art than ever.’1 In the following two summers he explored the mountains, castles and wilderness of Wales, which were to fire his imagination, before he set off to Italy in 1837. We are grateful to Colin Harrison for his help when cataloguing this work.
