Condition
The pigments in this watercolour have remained particularly fresh and it would appear that the picture has never been framed. There is a vertical line in the upper left hand section of the sheet, this would appear to be a paper flaw. The work is laid down to a piece of card (possibly the original).

Catalogue Note
This work, which is preserved in excellent condition, is dated 1800. With its rich tones, it is typical of Francia's early style and reveals the influence of Thomas Girtin, whom he had met while frequenting Dr Thomas Monro's house in London. Born in Calais, Francia arrived in England in 1795. He returned to France in 1817 and was famously to take on the young Richard Parkes Bonington as a pupil.
