Catalogue Note

On the 5th May 1757 Paul Sandby married Ann Stogden (1736-1797) and they went onto have three children - Paul, who joined the army but died on Barbados in 1793, aged twenty-six, Thomas Paul, seen here, who became an artist, following his father to become Drawings Master at Woolwich and finally Nancy, also seen here, who, according to the Royal Academy records of 1810, suffered from ‘profligate behaviour.’1 Judging by the ages of the children, this drawing can be dated to the middle of the 1780s.
