Catalogue Note
The fortified town of Alcalá de Guadaíra lies about ten kilometres from the centre of Seville and is positioned on the river Guadaíra.
Roberts stayed in Seville between late April and October 1833 and he visited Alcalá de Guadaíra in May. He made several watercolours of the old Moorish fortress from a distance, as well as studies of its streets and people. In the Prado Museum, Madrid, there is a small oil painting of this exact view, which may have been based on the present watercolour. We would like to thank Krystyna Matyjaszkiewicz for her help when cataloguing this work.
