Catalogue Note

Venice, for William Callow, was a very special place. He first visited the ‘floating city’ in the summer of 1840, then returned six years later while on honeymoon and continued to travel there regularly until 1892, when he was in his 80th year.

The present view is a fine example of his watercolour technique of the early 1860s. He stands on steps beside the Grand Canal, possibly at Palazzo Giustiniani, not far from the Piazza San Marco. Beyond the bustling crowd and gondoliers, Callow shows the Chiesa della Salute and the Punta della Dogana. In the far distance the Chiesa delle Zitelle is visible on the island of Giudecca.
