Catalogue Note

Although David Cox is celebrated for his depictions of rural Britain, he lived, for two separate periods of his life (1804 to 1814 and 1827 to 1840), in London. The river Thames was an important subject for him and he knew well the waters around Rotherhithe, where the Pilgrim Fathers had boarded the Mayflower. There is another version of this subject by the artist, painted on a larger scale, in the Birmingham City Art Museum.
