Condition
The colours in this work have been well preserved. There is a thin band of discolouration visible (behind the current mount) with is associated with old framing. This is typical and can not been seen unless the work is unframed. Overall the watercolour is in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Francis Nicholson was born and raised in Yorkshire and for a time lived in Knaresborough. Between 1792 and 1803 he lived in London and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1789. He found success as a landscapist and was patronised by important figures, including James Stewart, 1st Marquess of Bute and Turner’s later patron Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall. In 1804 Nicholson became a founder member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours of which he was elected president in December 1812.
