Catalogue Note

Chudleigh lies fifteen miles south-west of Exeter on the river Teign and is close to Ugbrooke Park, the Devonian ancestral home of the Clifford family. Ugbrooke’s custodian, in White Abbott's time, was Charles, 6th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. He was a patron of the arts and supporter of both White Abbott and his teacher Francis Towne. The present work descended within the artist’s family until 2002.
