Catalogue Note

Holne Chase is situated about three and a half miles to the west of the village of Ashburton, within the present day Dartmoor National Park. The estate of Holne Chase is ancient, having been granted to Baldwin FitzGilbert, Sheriff of Devon by William the Conqueror in 1066. The lands were to remain in the possession of his descendants until 1885.
