Catalogue Note

This drawing is based on a now lost work by Francis Towne. The scene is the vast Aiguilles du Dru, near Chamonix, drawn from Montanvert, the mountain that Towne had climbed to take a view of the Mer de Glace glacier on 16 September 1781. The sketching position is somewhat south-west of the present-day viewing platform on Montanvert, which suggests that Towne had descended to the glacier surface.

Abbott made more than twenty copies after Towne’s watercolours of Italy and Switzerland. Many are on Whatman paper dated 1813, and it is probable that Abbott painted them after Towne’s death in 1816. We are grateful to Dr Richard Stephens for his help when cataloguing this work.
