Catalogue Note

The powerful handling of pen and wash, and distinctive way of combining these media with elements of the composition drawn only in black chalk, are all qualities found in some of Lambert Doomer's less formal studies, such as The Departure of Rebecca, in Leiden1, or the very free view of Salt Pans at Le Croisic, made during the artist's French journey, in 1645.2  The actual form of the boat depicted is, however, closer to those seen in Doomer's drawings from his later journey up the Rhine, such as the view of Boppard, in the Lugt Collection.3  Like the only previously known drawing by the artist featuring a large river boat seen from close up, the British Museum's Riverbank with a Ferry4, this energetic, newly identified study by Doomer very likely dates from that significant journey of 1663.
