Catalogue Note

The entry in the Van Regteren Altena sale catalogue noted that although the drawing was presented as 'Circle of Claes Jansz. Visscher,' an attribution to Jacob Savery had also been suggested.  In fact, the style of this accomplished landscape seems much closer to that of Roelandt Savery, rather than his elder brother.  Although the composition, so reminiscent of Jan Breughel, is not typical of the work of either Savery, the handling of the pen, with its sweeping yet somewhat nervous lines and precise treatment of foliage, is close to that seen in a number of Roelandt's drawings made in Prague, notably the famous view of the Charles Bridge, in the collection of the Národni Galerie, Prague (inv. K 37.440).
