Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr. Andrew Robison who, having seen the drawing in the original, has kindly confirmed the attribution to Piranesi, dating the work to the early 1760s.  Dr Robison deduces that the awkward passages in the figure's proportions are due to the artist reworking his original lines and making adjustments and revisions to his own drawing.
