Condition

Laid down on an old mount. The sheet has discolored somewhat and there is evidence of some minor staining to the right and lower edges. The pen and ink medium is in otherwise good condition with the image strong.

The composition of the present work must surely have been inspired by a lost painting of the same subject by Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse, now only known through a number of workshop copies.1
